Supporting Resources

If you are keen to see how a previous event has been planned, performed and written up (impress your funders!), the SYSYF report is worth a look.

A variety of useful teaching resources are described below, most are free (downloadable) and some we make a small charge for to cover p+p. All are freely adaptable by yourselves, but please acknowledge Global Link as source!

  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights Summary (PDF WORD). From 'OUR WORLD OUR RIGHTS' courtesy of AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
  • 'Spot the Refugee' OHP slide - six well known figures, with background information, to spark discussions about the contribution refugees make to society. Ask us, and we'll mail you an OHP and notes.
  • Primary school activities, standalone.
  • 'Seeking Asylum' exercises (html, Word) and teachers' notes, which could be used either before or after Fortress Europe.
  • An activity pack to use well before the arrival of either Fortress Europe or Escape to Safety.
  • One hour workshop outline (PDF) to use with either Fortress Europe or Escape to Safety.
  • Download passport-based activities (PDF WORD) for use with Fortress Europe or Escape to Saftey -- please feel free to adapt this document as neccessary for your own use. Ideally, download, print, reduce and copy to make an A5 booklet. These passports are for children to have a workbook do whilst members of the class go through the exhibition. As the exhibition takes 15 minutes or so to go through the teacher is faced with a class of pupils going out, waiting and coming back, at all different stages of experience. The workbook is designed to be used before and after, and is not necessarily sequential. Please download and use the bits that you think will best suit your own classes. Add anything to it you like, but we have found that this format works best. Please try and keep some sort of evaluation however - we need some feedback for our records and the pupils use it immediately after the exhibition as a sort of down time to process their feelings - a very necessary step.
  • A set of teachers notes accompanying the passport activities.
  • Roleplaying game set in an Immigration Office (secondary). Email us for a photocopy.
  • Mock immigration form courtesy of Amnesty International, useful in roleplay to disorient and to bring up linguistic issues in workshops.
  • Transcription (PDF) of Escape to Safety soundtrack.
  • Escape to Safety 2006 Evaluation Report - details the motivation for Escape to Safety, how it was design and constructed, and its effectiveness.
