About Escape to Safety

Escape to safety is an interactive multimedia installation, built into a 12.5m box-trailer, that enables you to experience something of what it is like to be a refugee seeking asylum in Britain. It is designed for young people and adults from the age of 10 upwards. It provides the opporunity to think about issues such as:

  • What is the welcome we want to give to refugees?
  • What is your image of asylum seekers in Britain?
  • Where does this image come from?

Each participant walks through a labyrinth of 8 'stations' depicting the different stages a refugee experiences before seeking asylum in Britain. On a portable CD player, they are accompanied by refugee voices from Rwanda, Afghanistan and Palestine interacting with border immigrantion officials and the media.

Escape to Safety is an emotional experience combined with facts and figures, that challenges racism towards refugees. Escape to safety is premised on the idea that emotional learning is the most profound and effective form of learning.

The exhibition is suitable for the Citizenship curriculum for upper KS2 to KS4. It does however also have strong links to English, PSHE, History, Geography, Art and RE.

We have produced the video below to help convey the content of the Escape to Safety exhibition. You will need Flash Player installed to watch the video.
