Introduction
Fortress Europe is designed for adults and young people. Each participant walks through a 'labyrinth' of eight stations as if they were a refugee seeking asylum in Britain. On a walkman they are accompanied by refugee voices interacting with border-guards, immigration officials and tabloid media.
Fortress Europe is an emotional experience which challenges racism against refugees within the media. It aims to give participants an idea of what it feels like to be a refugee. The exhibition is premised on the idea that experiential learning is the most profound and effective form of learning.
This powerful experience is created through the moving stories on the tape, the disturbing music, the unique and claustrophobic ambience of each 'station' and the fact that each participant is making the journey alone, due to the isolating nature of the Walkman. The exhibition is suitable for secondary RE, Citizenship, History, KS3 Geography, Art, English (media studies) and PSHE.
The installation measures 18' x 21' and is constructed out of forty 8' high fire-proofed hardboard panels. Transport and assembly is normally provided by Global link, which is recommended unless the hirer is very familiar with the exhibition.
